Okay--see? The yarn on the right is the skein I made a few weeks ago and is happy and beautiful and balanced and just lovely.
The yarn on the left is the yarn I just finished. That was over-twisted and then I ran it through the wheel a second time, and now it's under-twisted . . .
Even though it had a nice, relaxing, warm bath, and hung to dry, and is a lot MORE balanced than it was, but still . . . I'm not happy with it. It just doesn't look RIGHT.
Right?
Hey--go over and wish Carole a happy blog-anniversary, huh?

don't you hate it when good wool goes bad?

I should confess that I've never run yarn back through the wheel. Maybe I should take a class?

Such a bummer! Good idea to try and run it back through though.

The yarn on the right definitely looks better. Thanks for the anniversary shout out!

How about running it through yet again to add a bit more twist? Is that an option.
Posted by: Cheryl | February 07, 2007 at 08:24 AM
Yep, classic under twist. Try running it back in on the slowest ratio for your wheel of choice without a woolee winder. The woolee winder stretches and elongates the twist which is really not what you want right now. Hold the yarn for as many treadles as needed for it to look balanced to you. This is one of the reasons why a woolee winder is not a good idea for this exercise. Once you figure out the baseline of number of treadles for each arm length it will go pretty fast.

Alas!! Can you fix it further?!
Posted by: Chris | February 07, 2007 at 09:37 AM
I'd spin it through one more time -- slow ratio. But you're probably already planning that!
The colors are gorgeous. :) How many yards per skein about?
Posted by: jess | February 07, 2007 at 09:47 AM
Definitely run it through again. Next time, before you ply an entire bobbin, take about a yard of plied off and stick it in hot water. That should give you an instant test of how it's going to be, especially if the singles have been on the bobbins for a while!

I don't spin and I can see a big difference in the two skeins. Good luck with the fix. I love the color.

I'm with the others, run it through again. It is definitely underplied. Just be careful not to overply it. Keep the balanced skein around and look to see that the /// on the bad one match the look on the good one. (/// = /// not /-/-/) if that makes any sense. Though this only would work if the singles in the bad skein were spun at approx the same twisty-ness as the good one.

Wow, what a difference, now had you not shown the two skeins together though I probably wouldn't have noticed as much. It's gorgeous yarn though either way, the colors are beautiful.

Hmmmmmm.... maybe it is just a free form kind of yarn!

Just looks like the one on the left is having a party;)
Posted by: Carol | February 07, 2007 at 01:19 PM
definitely - yarn on the right looks better to me too. I've never done the trick of running it back through the wheel again.. that would make me nervous. (smile)

Yeah. The one on the left definitely doesn't look as good as the one on the right. I hope you can fix it without TOO much trouble.

I hope you can fix it - that really sucks :o(
